Good Friday...A Child's Perspective

Yesterday Haley said to me, "Mommy, do you know what the mean soldiers did to Jesus? They poked Him and put him on the cross! That was not showing charity."

Yep...that basically sums up what we are remembering today!

Subject: KTVU Wins Peabody Award

To:       The KTVU News Team

Congratulations!   KTVU has won the prestigious Peabody Award for our coverage of the BART shooting and aftermath last year.    We are only one of five TV stations in the country to be selected.    This award is one of the highest national honors in journalism and it is a true "team" recognition.   All of you should be very proud.

KTVU submitted a comprehensive, 90-minute video entry along with extensive documentation showing our coverage and the lengths we went to dig up the facts, get access to court hearings and documents, and file California Public Records Act requests to obtain information.    The shooting of Oscar Grant by police officer Johannes Mehserle on the Fruitvale BART platform in the early morning hours of January 1, 2009 is a tragedy on many levels.  But, in the words of the judges, KTVU was awarded the Peabody for our "persistent digging afterwards that revealed serious, systematic problems in the Bay Area Rapid Transit police's tactics."

It is important to remember, after KTVU obtained the exclusive video of the actual shooting, we made the difficult journalistic decision to air the footage along with a warning to our viewers.    It was not a decision we made lightly.   We concluded that because there were so many questions being raised about the sequence and timing of events, along with discrepancies about actions taken by police and victim, we felt it was critically important to both sides and our viewers to air the video.   Ultimately, our role as journalists is to seek the truth.   KTVU is committed to aggressively following the case.

I applaud all the efforts of our newsroom for handling the many challenges of covering the story, protests and riots.   Everyone exhibited the highest levels of professionalism in dealing with the courts, the police, the public and the families of the people involved.   You were all part of passionate editorial discussions about the right way to cover this story.     There are literally more than one hundred KTVU news employees who have been involved in our coverage over the past 15 months, so I won't try to name and thank every one of you in this note.   But I want each and every one of you to know that I recognize and appreciate your efforts individually as part of the team effort.

Great Job !!!    I am very proud of all of you.

Ed Chapuis

KTVU News Director

The Peabody Awards are given annually by the Grady School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Georgia and are the oldest and longest running electronic journalism awards in the country.  First presented in 1941, they are considered to be one of the most prestigious in the journalism profession.   The award is named after George Foster Peabody (1852-1938) who was a highly successful investment banker who devoted much of his fortune to education and social enterprise.   While he never saw television and only rarely listened to radio, the visage of George Foster Peabody has become synonymous with excellence in electronic media.

Busy!

The last few weeks have been very busy...thus very few blog posts!! But, next week is Easter break, so I hope to get some more pictures up! For now, just a few pics of the girls playing around the house!

Chef Kyleigh...notice the apron (she wore it all afternoon) and the beautiful bed head :)

Haley was very busy building a castle...it had quite the foundation!

Last week, when I had to work a few long days, Gina spent the afternoon with Haley. They went to the park for a few hours, and then decided to get their nails painted. Haley was quite proud of her toes!! Hot pink with polka dots :)

Fun Haley Stuff

This is video of Haley pretending to be sick and throwing up. It happened a while ago so I cannot remember what trigger this episode, but we thought the video was hysterical!

This was a cheer the kids at school did when the Bishop came to visit in January. Haley started singing it the other day, so I thought I get her to do it for the video camera too! Love the nose picking at the beginning too ;)

Here's how to keep a 3 year old busy when the baby is sleeping and you need to get things done...sort the change cup!

Earthquakes and Window Washing

In light of all the earthquakes that have happened recently, we decided it was time to be sure we are ready for the next big one! So, assuming our balcony doesn't collapse and drop/crush everything, we are set!
We have four 5-gallon jugs of water, an emergency bucket of food (purchased online from Costco...55 meals/275 servings...The Smiths turned us on to this one!), and a tub full of more food, medical supplies, medications, batteries, etc.

Haley asked me if she could help clean last weekend. So, I assigned her the windows...Haley style! She painted them with water and then wiped them down! Now I really do need to clean the windows! At one point she decided she needed sunglasses to finish her job!

The Greatest Show on Earth!

Last week, the Pre-School and Kindergarten classes at school put on a circus. Haley was an adorable acrobat and took her job very seriously!

First, the somersaults

Then, the tightrope!...Careful!

And now for my trick! One foot!

Thank you to my loyal audience!
